Thailand Visa Rules 2026: The Changes That Actually Matter
16 August 2026 · Sawasdee Visas
Thai immigration changed more in the last year than in the previous five. Here's the 2026 rundown — what actually affects you, what doesn't, and the mistakes we're seeing people make with the new rules.
Visa runs are being choked — on purpose
Since November 2025, the Immigration Bureau has denied entry to visa-exemption users entering more than twice in close succession without a justifiable reason, capped extensions at 2 per calendar year, and stopped same-day exit/re-entry from resetting the count. Land-border entries no longer qualify for the 30-day extension. About 2,900 denials were logged in 2025. The message is clear: border bounces are no longer a strategy. If you're staying long-term, pick a proper visa. See our visa runs guide for the honest version.
The TDAC is now part of flying to Thailand
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card replaced the paper arrival card. You complete it online before boarding — flight details, accommodation, contact info. It's free and takes five minutes, but airlines do check. Our visa exemption guide covers it with the rest of the entry rules.
The DTV is still the digital nomad's best route — with conditions
The Destination Thailand Visa remains the strongest option for remote workers: 5 years, multiple entry, 180 days per stay, no Thai work permit for foreign employers. Requirements have tightened since launch (funds proof is scrutinised, and you must apply from outside Thailand), so preparation matters more than it used to. Full breakdown on our DTV page.
The 60-day exemption is here to stay
Citizens of 93+ countries get 60 days visa-free, extendable once by 30. That's up to 90 days on one entry — enough for most visits. Just don't treat exemption entries as a lifestyle: the pattern is exactly what immigration now flags.
What to do about it
If you're visiting: sort the TDAC, know your 60/30 days, and extend legally if you stay longer. If you're building a life here: DTV, LTR, retirement or a work permit — decide before your stamps tell the story for you. We assess every case honestly before you pay anything.
